If the admins reconfigured the K-K so that some content (threads) was subscription-based, the site might have survived. But most members wanted access for free, and unfortunately it costs money to run a site like K-K. And again, many moderators can be found at similar sites using the same or different aliases. Some moderators have their own sites, too...

If I had to guess, they've been taken down by yet another DDOS attack. They seem to be a regular target of them.
